I won't tell you an epic. I'd rather tell you the truth, which is more useful: I've reinvented myself several times, and each time I learned to look a little closer. Those reinventions aren't something to soften; they're my credential. I've taken apart organizations and teams that looked broken, and almost always found they only needed unhurried hands and someone willing to listen to the mechanism before forcing it.

Flagship case
500: The Winner's Path
France Telecom Orange was going through a hard commercial crisis. The team was worn down, the numbers didn't add up, and morale was on the floor. The easy call would have been to tighten the same bolt. We chose the opposite: stop, listen, rebuild the mechanism piece by piece, and give people back the sense that their work mattered.
The underlying number: we were losing market share, dropping from 300 points of sale to almost 190. Competitors were taking points of sale and partners, and with them went people's sense of purpose and trust in the company. In under four months we rebuilt the distribution network past 500 points, the number that gives the case its name: new partners, more committed and more aggressive than the ones we had lost; company-owned points of sale that gave the operation permanence in critical markets; and a franchise network of more than 100 points with national reach. It wasn't an incentive campaign. It was putting the mechanism back together piece by piece, until people trusted again that their work mattered.

Today I spend my time restoring: organizations, people, and — when I can — a little of the time the noise takes from us. If you'd like to see what's on the bench this month, stop by the workbench.
